Toyota's System Works in a Bengkel in Bekasi

His name was Bernad.  In his 30s, he owns a small bengkel in Bekasi and he’s been a loyal clientele of the Bank.  I remember him sitting in the front row, eyes bright and shining, totally eager to learn, and taking notes the whole time.  In March 2011, his business makes Rp 8 million per week.  By early June, it turns over Rp 30 million per week.

In December, I gave a seminar for 150 microbusiness clients from CIMB Niaga for their Success Academy program.  Two weeks after, I got an sms from a participant saying their revenue increased 40% just by implementing what he learned.

His name was Bernad.  In his 30s, he owns a small bengkel in Bekasi and he’s been a loyal clientele of the Bank.  I remember him sitting in the front row, eyes bright and shining, totally eager to learn, and taking notes the whole time.  In March 2011, his business makes Rp 8 million per week.  By early June, it turns over Rp 30 million per week.

But let’s go back to December, when his revenues just increased by 40%.  What happened?

He said that he implemented the Toyota concept.  He heard me share an example of Toyota and he took that back into his shop and implemented changes.  Just with that 1 learning, his team’s productivity soared and he was able to increase his capacity.  Wow!  Let’s hear more.

You see, Bernad has about 4 mechanics working on various motorcycles.  One mechanic was in charge of repairing different aspects of the bike from start to finish.  What he learned through the Toyota system is that one mechanic is in charge of specific tasks.  And he focuses on that task only.  Another mechanic does another thing repeatedly focusing on the same task.  And so on.

Simple but effective.  Because everyone was focusing only on 1 task, they did their job faster.  They got into “flow” which meant that they developed a routine and an easier way to do the job gradually.  Because of the repetition, their speed of work increased.  They lined up their tools closer to the working place and spent less time walking around finding tools to use.  Overall effectiveness and productivity went up.  Less mistakes too.

With this simple change, the bengkel increased their productivity and can handle more customers especially on a crowded Saturday morning.  They used to turn away customers because they had no time and no capacity.  Now they serve more and of course, get more revenues.

Now Bernad is a happy man.  This change combined with other marketing strategies he learned from his Group Coaching class have given him a fantastic business, tripled his revenues and cashflow, and given him a more realistic hope for the years to come.
